January Ice Jam, 2010

Spring has just begun, but now is the time to begin making plans for the next January Ice Jam.

Room reservations will be accepted begining Monday March 30.

January Ice Jam - January 15 - 16, 2010

Days Inn, Butler Pa. - (724) 287 6761

If you haven't heard the Meadville jam will also be January 15 - 16, 2010, This means there may be less competition for rooms. The conflict in dates is due to a communications mix up between the organizers, but I understand it is to late for either hotel to change dates. Hopefully both events will still be successful because they each draw heavily from the local community. It is obvious bands and attendees who go to both events have a tough choice to make.

New Releases From Rebel, May 5

MAY 5TH RELEASES ON REBEL RECORDS
One Track From Each Album Hitting Radio This Week on Prime Cuts of Bluegrass

Two Dimes and A Nickel by David Davis & The Warrior River Boys

This spring marks the latest release from bluegrass veterans David Davis & The Warrior River Boys. The album, titled Two Dimes and a Nickel, hits streets May 5th on Rebel Records. It is the band's third for the label and presents another dynamic collection of fresh, hard-driving bluegrass tunes from the Alabama front man and his talented backing group.

As many fans of the genre know, bluegrass runs deep in David Davis's veins. His father played in several regional bands, and his Uncle Cleo was Bill Monroe's first sideman after splitting with brother Charlie. Given this lineage, the record delivers just what we'd expect: solid, no-frills-attached bluegrass music. But don't confuse these ties to tradition for a lack of originality. Two Dimes and a Nickel packs in several cutting-edge, never-recorded-before compositions, including the title - and perhaps standout - track written by Alan Johnston. Lead singing duties on eleven of the album's twelve songs are handled by Davis, whose expressive singing style and crystal clear mandolin leads shine throughout.

The Warrior River Boys have a busy nationwide tour schedule ahead of them this summer. For tour dates and more information please visit http://www.daviddavisandwrb.com/ or http://www.myspace.com/daviddavisandwrb.

Way Up on a Mountain by Spring Creek

Since forming five years ago, Spring Creek has emerged as the hottest young band among the newest generation of pickers in the Rocky Mountain bluegrass scene. In 2007, the Lyons, Colorado-based foursome rocketed onto the national stage when they became the only group to ever capture the band competitions at the Telluride and RockyGrass Festivals in the same year. This fall Spring Creek signed with Rebel Records and will be unveiling their label debut Way Up on a Mountain on May 5th.

Way Up on a Mountain projects a sound that derives its inspiration from the soul of the Rocky Mountains but maintains its footing in the Appalachian hills and Piedmont of the bluegrass heartland. Drawing from the same creative wellspring that produced greats such as Hot Rize, Leftover Salmon, and Yonder Mountain String Band, the album bursts with a freshness that is certain to ensure Spring Creek a spot among Colorado's bluegrass innovators. Equally, Way Up on a Mountain demonstrates the band's keen mastery of traditional bluegrass and their deep respect for its Appalachian origins. The resulting product is a sound that is both traditional and original, daring yet indebted to the forefathers of bluegrass. Way Up on a Mountain is certain to win the hearts of listeners in the bluegrass heartland as well those of the genre's ever-broadening fan-base worldwide.

Most of the tracks are originals, but the album also features material by Ricky Nelson and BIll Monroe - the homage to Monroe highlighting Spring Creek's respect for the legends of bluegrass. IBMA award-winning fiddler Michael Cleveland contributes his masterful work on several tracks

In support of Way Up on a Mountain, Spring Creek will spend 2009 performing at festivals and venues nationwide, including stops at the prestigious Merlefest in Wilkesboro, NC and Old Settlers Festival in Austin, TX. For a full schedule and more information on the band, please visit http://www.springcreekbluegrassband.com/ or www.myspace.com/springcreek.

Special Consensus Releases Signs

(Columbus, NC) - Greg Cahill and Special Consensus release Signs on March 24th. Band members include Greg Cahill on banjo, Justin Carbone on guitar and vocals, Ashby Frank on mandolin and vocals, and David Thomas on bass and vocals.

Through the band's 34-year existence, 14 albums, and 38 band alum, Cahill has been able to maintain the same high standard of music through each incarnation.

Cahill explains "I'm not a lead singer, so I can either try to mold them, which doesn't necessarily accentuate their strengths, or I can look at change as a positive thing. And if I do that, one of the things that keeps me going is the freshness - we always try to keep doing some of the old songs, but people are excited because they're going to be putting something in themselves, too."
Signs features twelve songs, half of which are written or co-written by band members Frank, Carbone, and Cahill. "Everyone brings in songs they think might suit the style."It's a real team effort - everybody is pulling for the other guy as much as for himself," says Cahill. Guests include Randy Kohrs on dobro, Tim Crouch on fiddle, and Sonya Issacs contributing vocals on the gospel song, "Footprints" by Ronnie Bowman.

Cahill has been fostering talented musicians the whole while and continually gives back to the bluegrass community. He conducts workshops at festivals, teaches at various music camps and the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, in addition to releasing four instructional videos. He has recently been thrust into the limelight of the bluegrass community as the President and Chairman of the Board for the International Bluegrass Music Association.

To listen to tracks from the record and to view Special Consensus' online press kit: Special Consensus.
"Every incarnation of the band has had its own sound. This one - combines the momentum of the best bluegrass bands with a melodic and lyrical bent." - Vintage Guitar

"More than 30 years into the history of the Special C, (Cahill) knows the sweet spot where tradition and innovation are balanced in a satisfying equilibrium, and where individual strength and team effort are so well blended that it's hard to see where one leaves off and the other begins...Signs is one aptly titled album that ought to make the world sit up and take notice. - Jon Weisberger

"Special Consensus has a remarkable record of being able to survive adversity and improve their overall sound each time they change members. Greg Cahill is a master at finding great songs, great musicians and vocalists." - Hank Janney, WGTY

FYI: SPECIAL CONSENSUS WILL BE PART OF THE LAUREL HIGHLANDS LUEGRASS FESTIVAL, JUNE 19 - 20. Click here for festival details.

Roots Music Series: Spring 2009 Concert

Seldom Scene Saturday, April 25, 2009

On Saturday, April 25 at 8PM, the Roots Music Series will present bluegrass legends Seldom Scene in concert at the Frostburg Palace Theatre. Additional details will follow...

One of the founding members, banjo player BEN ELDRIDGE, has been with The Seldom Scene since its inception, and he still performs with the same fire and enthusiasm that characterized the band's early days as a progressive group that took Bluegrass music to new heights.

DUDLEY CONNELL plays a masterful guitar and provides powerful lead vocals for The Scene, which has a reputation for challenging the bounds of Bluegrass; and Connell's musical virtuosity has pushed the group beyond these bounds. Audiences delight in Connell's renditions of traditional songs like "Old Train", folk ballads such as "Blue Diamond Mine", and blues songs like "Rollin' and Tumblin'". Connell is a former member of The Johnson Mountain Boys.

Playing Dobro for The Scene is one of the most respected dobro players on the Bluegrass scene today, FRED TRAVERS. He is also an accomplished vocalist who brings solid lead and harmony to The Scene. Travers is a former member of the Gary Ferguson Band.

RONNIE SIMPKINS plays rock-steady bass for the group and provides the bass vocals in The Scene's quartets as well. Simpkins has been performing Bluegrass music since childhood and is a former member of The Tony Rice Unit.

LOU REID, who plays mandolin for The Scene and provides the tenor vocals, is also a former member of Ricky Scaggs band, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, and he currently fronts his own group Carolina. On lead, or when providing harmony, Reid's vocals are the epitome of the powerful, "high, lonesome" tenor that is the signature of Bluegrass music.

Bradley Walker
The Nashville Scene called Bradley Walker "arguably the best unsigned singer in bluegrass" in 2003, and while that's no longer true today, it's only because he's no longer unsigned. Releasing his Carl Jackson-produced Rounder Records debut, Highway Of Dreams, in 2006, Walker celebrated with a featured show that fall at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium and a national TV appearance on Jerry Lewis' renowned MDA Telethon that stunned audiences with his rich, country-flavored baritone voice. Born with a form of muscular dystrophy, Bradley's determination first won him fans among bluegrass' most prominent artist - Illrd Tyme Out and the Lonesome River Band among them - and earned him guest appearances on stage and television with them before he launched his solo career. Since then, he's become a favorite of fans across the country for his intimate delivery, winning sense of humor, unmistakable sincerity and pure artistry.
2007 IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year
"...inspirational and heartbreaking, a choice that would make Lefty Frizzel proud." - Brian Mansfield, USA Today
"It has been many years since I have been moved by a debut album the way I am moved by Highway of Dreams" - Robert K. Oermann, Music Row, 2006
"...Walker is a powerhouse...he gets it right every time - Ken Tucker, Entertainment Weekly, 2006
"...wowing audiences everywhere...Walker seems poised to go as far as he wants." -Chris Neal, Country Weekly, 2007

Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper
Rounder Recording Artist

Award-winning fiddler Michael Cleveland brings dynamic traditional
bluegrass to the stage with his band, Flamekeeper, in a show that will
leave the audience talking. A five-time winner of the International
Bluegrass Music Association's Fiddle Player of the Year award, Mike and
his talented band present a program of tight vocal trios and duos,
blistering instrumentals, and fiddle-and-banjo duets that echo the
first-generation stars of bluegrass. The show is rounded out with Mike's
dry wit and the band's sense of fun.
Considered one of the premier bluegrass fiddlers of his generation,
Mike picked up a fiddle at age four, and his talent was recognized early.
In 1993 he was chosen to be part of the Bluegrass Youth All Stars at the
IBMA’s award show. Later that year Mike made his Grand Ole Opry
debut as a guest of Alison Krauss. His list of guest appearances over the
years is a who's who of bluegrass legends including Bill Monroe, Jim
and Jesse, Ralph Stanley, Mac Wiseman, Doc Watson, Larry Sparks,
Doyle Lawson, and J.D. Crowe.
After high school Mike briefly toured with then-named Dale Ann
Bradley and Coon Creek before joining Rhonda Vincent and The Rage
in 2000. At the 2001 IBMA awards, Mike took his first Fiddle Player of
the Year award, and shared the title of Entertainer of the Year with
Rhonda Vincent and the Rage. In 2002 Mike rejoined The Dale Ann
Bradley Band. That year he won the Fiddle Player of the Year award and
again in 2004.
Mike's first project as a Rounder recording artist, “Flame Keeper,” was
released in February 2002 and was chosen the IBMA’s Instrumental
Album of the Year. In 2004, Mike shared the Instrumental Album of the
Year award with Tom Adams for “Tom Adams and Michael Cleveland
Live at the Ragged Edge,” an album of fiddle and banjo duets. In 2006,
2007, and 2008 Mike took home his fourth and fifth and sixth Fiddle
Player of the Year awards.
Today Mike is a sought-after guest and has performed recently with
Vince Gill, Marty Stuart, The Mark Newton Band, J.D. Crowe and the
New South, Audie Blaylock and Redline, Melvin Goins and Windy
Mountain and The Wildwood Valley Boys. He is also an active studio
musician, and his credits include the 2005 GRAMMY®-nominated “A
Tribute to Jimmy Martin: The King of Bluegrass” and a 2003 GRAMMY®
winner, Jimmy Sturr's “Let's Polka 'Round.”

Bluegrass Benefit in Donegal Pa.

Forwarded message from Chris Rossi:

Hi all,
I would like to bring to your attention an event that is going to take place on March 28th, from 6pm until ??? at the American Legion post in Donegal. The benefit is for the family of Samuel Hicks. Samuel Hicks, 33, was one of several federal investigators closing in on an cocaine distribution ring in western Pennsylvania when he was killed. There will be a $5 cover at the door and a buffet included with the cover. Throughout the night, there will be 50/50 drawings as well as numerous raffles for prizes donated by local business. There is a bar that will serve adult beverages, therefore no one under 18 will be permitted to attend.

Music will be provided by two bands, East Run Band from Doddridge Co, West Virginia, a band who I have had the privilege to play with recently, along with the Gypsy Knights. Some of you will know the Knights from playing locally. The band consists of Scott Brown, Pat Petraca, Joe Goldon and Don Brown. Come on out and eat, drink and enjoy a wonderful night of music for a good cause. Doors will open at 6 pm with the music starting at 8pm and ending around midnight. Hope to see you there.

Alison Brown to Release New CD/DVD

Alison Brown, GRAMMY-award winning banjoist, "ground-breaker" (USA Today), and co-founder of Compass Records announces new CD The Company You Keep (April 7, 2009) + bonus DVD

Included with the first 5000 copies of the album shipping to retail is a free full length concert DVD taped live at Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN). The DVD, which was filmed in HD and recorded in high res audio, features the Alison Brown Quartet with Joe Craven on a set that includes tunes from The Company You Keep as well as fan favorites from past albums.

To sample tracks from The Company You Keep click here.

To see all of Alison Brown's tour dates, click here.

The title of Alison Brown's new studio release, The Company You Keep, was originally inspired by the words of Spanish novelist Miguel de Cervantes (Don Quixote): "Tell me the company you keep and I'll tell you what you are." But it wasn't until the project began to develop that Brown realized the title actually held two separate, but equally important, meanings for her and for her music. "I've been writing, recording and performing my own tunes for nearly 20 years now," Brown reflects. "And as I thought about the progression of my sound - our band sound - I began to think about what a collaborative effort this musical journey has been. After 15 years of recording, performing and philosophizing about music with (pianist) John R Burr and (bassist) Garry West, I really wanted to draw that collaborative spirit to the forefront on this album." The Company You Keep features the musicians she has spent most of the past 15 years performing with: John R. Burr (piano), Garry West (bass), David Grisman Quintet alum Joe Craven (fiddle/mandolin/percussion) and Larry Atamanuik (drums) alongside guests John Doyle (guitar), Stuart Duncan (fiddle) and Kenny Malone (drums) on a set of engaging, upbeat and melodic tunes, many of which were co-written by Brown and Burr, in some cases right before the recording sessions.

According to Brown, The Company You Keep is also a tip of the hat to her approach to business as one of the co-founders of the Compass Records Group. "I co-founded Compass with Garry West the same year that I began touring with my own band so the development of the label and the development of the band have grown up in tandem, even though I didn't release an album on Compass until 1998." At a time when the record business is being turned upside down the Compass Records Group has continued to grow and today boasts nearly 600 releases across the Compass, Green Linnet and Mulligan Records catalogs. "Our artistic aesthetic is very well described by the idea that the company we've built and sustain (both in our roster and our staff) reflects our values and musical priorities. We take a very long tail approach to our business and feel a great sense of pride in having built a business model that is scaled to be successful with records that may only sell a few thousand units. Some of our smallest records say more about us as a label than our biggest selling records do."

Alison Brown is a Harvard alum, received her MBA from UCLA and worked as an investment banker before joining Alison Krauss and Union Station for a three year stint in 1989. She has received 3 GRAMMY nominations for her solo recordings and a GRAMMY award in 2001 for Best Country Instrumental Performance as well as the International Bluegrass Music Association's award for Banjo Player of the Year. Praised by both fans and critics alike, her take on the traditionally Appalachian instrument has earned Brown features on CBS Sunday Morning, NPR's All Things Considered, and in The Wall Street Journal. The Company You Keep will be available everywhere April 7, 2009.

Rural Rhythm Signs Tommy Webb

HEARTLAND – A New CD by Tommy Webb Set for April Release

Rural Rhythm Records is proud to announce the upcoming April 21, 2009 release of the new album by TOMMY WEBB titled, “HEARTLAND.” Tommy is from Langley, Kentucky located in Floyd County near the well-known Highway Route 23 that so many award-winning Country and Bluegrass music artists have originated. His voice has a genuine Big Country & Rootsy Bluegrass quality brand that is unmistakably his own - Simply put, he sounds like Tommy Webb!

Ron Stewart produced the album and recently commented, "Tommy Webb is one of those rare ‘Down to Earth, No Sugar Coating’ talents that only comes along once in a grand while that grabs you and makes you listen. This is the third CD of Tommy's that I have been a part of, and from that first time I hit the record button and heard him sing, I knew that I, along with the rest of the bluegrass and acoustic music world, would be hearing a lot more from this guy, and hopefully I would be involved!"

The upcoming album includes 12 songs, several written by Tommy Webb, and also includes two strong songs, re-mixed and re-mastered, from his previous two albums: the hit "If It Weren't For Bluegrass Music (I'd Go Crazy)” that reached #4 on the Bluegrass Unlimited Top 30 Singles Chart and “A Hard Row to Hoe.” Rural Rhythm just released two new tracks last month on the Rural Rhythm Fresh Cuts & Key Tracks #4 radio compilation CD: “Teardrop Inn” and “Heartland.”

"Teardrop Inn,” written by Mike Wells, is an emotionally-packed love story tragically gone wrong, filled with all the familiar cheating on the other side of town lyrics that speak to the hurtful emotion and fiery passion of a woman scorned. The harmonies are truly haunting and capture the direct and raw emotion of the woman’s last words to her gentlemen lover who’s done her wrong.“Heartland” was written by Tommy Webb and Sam Passamano, Jr. (President of Rural Rhythm Records). “This is a very timely song considering the tough economic times throughout America and all over the world. It’s a time when our world leaders need to take charge, work together, find solutions, get results and not let party lines or world politics get in the way of turning this economy around,” said Passamano. “Tommy's song ‘Heartland’ reaches the heart and soul of the everyday working man and woman and their plight enduring through these hard times, just trying to survive.

Tommy Webb lives in the heartland, in both body and spirit, and writes passionate songs about life in the heartland. His new album clearly defines the Tommy Webb sound and will surely turn a lot more heads as they discover his unique and refreshing “salt of the earth” vocal style and songwriting talents.

Musicians on the album include: Tommy Webb (lead vocals, guitar, clawhammer banjo); Chris Goble (banjo, harmony vocals); Kenny O’Quinn (mandolin, harmony vocals); Danny Stiltner (bass, harmony vocals); Ron Stewart (fiddle, mandolin, resonator guitar, bass, harmony vocals); and Sherri Stewart (harmony vocals). For more information on Tommy Webb, please visit http://www.thetommywebbband.com/ or http://www.ruralrhythm.com/

Del McCoury 50 Year Retrospective - Coming 05/12/09

Celebrating 50 Years Of Del Mccoury - Bluegrass Icon’s Quintessential Restrospective

“Del gives hope to everybody…To keep the purity that you need to do this kind of music, and the drive and energy, that takes a special kind of guy.”– Elvis Costello

Nashville, TN, McCoury Music is proud to announce the upcoming May 12th release of CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF DEL McCOURY.

CELBRATING 50 YEARS OF DEL McCOURY is a stunning 5-disc special edition box set collection encapsulating a 50-year legacy of brilliant, heartfelt music from the Bluegrass icon, who recently celebrated another milestone by turning 70 years old. With more than 30 new recordings of songs from Del’s first 40 years of performing and an additional 18 from the Del McCoury’s Band most essential tracks of the last decade, this quintessential box set is complete with a 12-page full color booklet of photographs from the McCoury family archives–some which have never been seen.
From classics that he first sang back in the late 1950s to such stunning originals as “High On A Mountain,” “Are You Teasing Me,” “Dark Hollow,” “Bluest Man In Town,” “Rain And Snow,” “Good Man Like Me, “Rain Please Go Away,” as well as “Nothin’ Special” and “Never Grow Up Boy” from the Grammy-winning, The Company We Keep, it’s truly a life’s work being handed down.
“Del gives hope to everybody—fifty years is a long time to be playing music in any field,” says Elvis Costello. “But to keep the purity that you need to do this kind of music, and the drive and energy, that takes a special kind of guy.”
Elvis’ words are echoed by other master musicians and fans alike whose support for Del has only intensified over the years. The onetime Bill Monroe sideman is now the music’s spiritual and artistic heir. Since the early 90’s, Del’s popularity has soared. In addition to countless awards, including a Grammy and 3 dozen IBMA’s (and an unprecedented 9 Entertainer of the Year trophies), Del’s influence reaches well beyond his Bluegrass disciples, from 2008 Grammy Album of the Year winner Alison Krauss, to Dierks Bentley, Steve Earle, Vince Gill, and jamband fav’s Phish, Leftover Salmon and Yonder Mountain String Band.
CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF DEL McCOURY was recorded in a marathon session that lasted only a few days. As befits a living legend, and a lively one at that, he brings a fresh and inspired take to all the tracks, particularly those that have been part of his repertoire since the beginning.
“We went through the songs pretty quickly,” says son Ronnie, who plays mandolin. “Take after take, it was just great. Dad sounds better than ever on here. We had a list of songs that the three of us made, with fifteen or twenty songs from each of the decades and the albums that he made before he started owning his own recordings, and he would just pick some things to record on each session—and then we just went in and knocked them out. So they all have a real live feel to them.”
CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF DEL MCCOURY is far from a swan-song. If Del’s summer tour schedule is any indication, it’s going to be a lively celebration indeed. Details are forthcoming about a rigorous schedule, including a much coveted slot at Bonnaroo, one of the nations biggest summer festivals. Del will also be hosting the 2nd Annual Delfest in Cumberland, MD in May. For more information, as well as late-breaking news, visit: McCoury Music.
For any elements you might need (art, bio, photos, etc), visit the 50 years of Del McCoury info page.

4th Annual Monroe-Style Mandolin Camp

OWENSBORO, KY- March 6, 2009 - This museum will present the 4th annual Monroe-Style Mandolin Camp this coming September 11-13 2009 in Owensboro, Kentucky. Our goal in hosting this camp is to preserve the unique, historic performance art of Bill Monroe, "The Father of Bluegrass," by teaching his style of mandolin playing and songwriting to a new generation of players. Our Faculty Mike Compton, Camp & Curriculum Director Dr. Richard Brown, Associate Director Skip Gorman, Tim O'Brien. Jody Stecher, Butch Waller, Special Guests

Tom Ewing, Monroe historian, concert performer, Will Kimble, luthier.
The 2009 curriculum has been revised by Camp Director Mike Compton, one of the world's pre-eminent mandolin teachers. The new classes will reflect his experience after three years at the Monroe-Style Mandolin Camp and ongoing conversations with campers and faculty. He will lead our 2009 faculty in presenting new classes and workshops related to the development and execution of Monroe's mandolin style, songwriting, musical influences, and more.
At the Monroe-Style Mandolin Camp, you will spend three days with 6 of the finest mandolin players and 50 of the coolest mandolin campers on Planet Earth. With registration capped at 50, the camp's intimate environment allows for ample opportunities to receive personal, hands-on instruction from each of these legends of Monroe-Style mandolin.
New to this year's camp on Friday is an All-Night Pickin' Party and Bluegrass Invitational which will bring local and regional musicians together with campers for a non-stop jam session and barbeque feast.
New to this year's camp on Saturday between 4:30 and 5:00 will be six 30-minute private master classes, one with each member of the faculty. All campers' names will be put in Red Smiley's hat. Six names will be drawn at the opening session Friday at noon. (If your name is drawn and you don't want or need this master class, we can either re-draw or you can gift it to a friend.)
Returning in 2009 is a class on Mandolin Set Up and Maintenance by Will Kimble of Kimble Mandolins. Will is available Friday and Saturday for basic set ups and fret work. He will charge for materials and a reasonable fee for each work order. Please request a WORK ORDER FORM from Brenda Smith at the museum: 270-926-7891. Your mandolin will get an "appointment" based on the estimated time required to perform the requested service. The 2009 All-Star Faculty Concert will be amazing. Each member of the faculty is an internationally known performer with his own band (see bios). Tom Ewing, Monroe's last guitarist with the Blue Grass Boys, adds vintage authenticity and historic relevance as well as great vocals and rhythm guitar. Campers are invited to an exclusive wine reception at the museum prior to the concert.

One needs only to look at the skills of our faculty and other leading contemporary mandolin players to realize that they became what they are today due in part to their in-depth study of Monroe's music and performance style, and by trading Monroe-isms with others through the years. The Monroe-Style Mandolin Camp is the ultimate gathering spot for Monroe enthusiasts. Satisfy your desire to "Know Monroe" by spending the anniversary of his birth and passing at the museum and the camp dedicated to preserving his legacy.

An Interesting Post Brings Back Memories

The following post and reply were taken from the Western Pennsylvania Bluegrass Committee discussion site. I thought it would be of general interest.

Hard to believe it's been almost 20 years... I'm sure there are at least a few on this list who used to attend the Beaver Valley Bluegrass Festival that the Beaver Creek Bluegrass Band used to hold at Brady's Run Park in Beaver County back in the eighties and nineties. And what a festival it was. I sorely miss it.
Some of the biggest names in bluegrass were playing in our own back yard each Memorial Day weekend. It was there I first saw Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, Tony Rice, Hot Rize, Doyle and Quicksilver, and many other top bluegrass acts of the day. You don't really appreciate something like that until it's gone.
Rich or Randy Ord, if you're reading this, thank you. Anyway, Del McCoury was one of the headliners in 1989, and one of his sets, during which David Grisman and Sam Bush sat in on a few numbers, was recorded, and can now be downloaded freely and legally from this page:http://www.archive.org/details/del1989-05-27lateflac
A few words of caution:The files are huge and are in FLAC format, which is a lossless audio format that you probably can't play directly in Windows Media Player (I can't) and probably can't play directly in WinAmp either (I can't). You'll need to download a decoder to convert them to WAV files, which you can play directly, burn to a CD, or convert to MP3. There are probably lots of free decoders available; I got one from here:http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html
The interface is non-intuitive, so you should probably be fairly handy with computers before attempting to use it. If you're not, enlist a friend who is. It's well worth the effort. The sound quality isn't superb, but it isn't bad either. And Del and the boys are absolutely on fire for this set.

Reply:

I was back on the side of the stage when this took form. David Grisman was playing with Del McCoury. David broke a string and came off stage to change it. Sam Bush was hanging out backstage so David told Sam to grab his mandolin and go back up with him. They would do a 3 mandolin thing with Ronnie McCoury. Sam grumbled that David and Ronnie where warmed up and he was coming up cold but he did it.It was amazing.I am glad there is a recording of it.

Ronnie Reno and Reno Tradition Coming To Keyser WV

I am passing along this info just received from Lynn Beckman. Any show by Ronnie will be a good one, lots of his music mixed with his dad's classics, an easy Saturday drive from western PA. HIGHLY RECOMENDED!!

Hey John,
I just wanted to say thanks, again, for your playing some of my music and to let you know that we are going to have RONNIE RENO AND THE RENO TRADITION in Keyser, West Virginia, on Saturday, March 21 for the POTOMAC HIGHLANDS MAPLE FESTIVAL.

The show will be at the brand new Keyser High School Auditorium just south of Keyser.

NEW CREEK STATION (regional bluegrass band--good one) is set to come on for the first show at 1 p.m. followed by Ronnie and the guys from 2-4 p.m.

I am to MC the show. Of course, we'd love to have you come if you can make it. Let me know if you can come. If you can mention the show on your radio show, that would be wonderful and much appreciated.

For information folks can call me at 301-387-9275 or call the Keyser High School or email me at lbeckman@lynnbeckman.com . Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Hope to see you and folks from your listening audience there..... Thanks, John. Keep up the great work you are doing...

Blessings, Lynn Beckman
