Dale Perry Joins Pine Mountain Railroad

A message from Cody Shuler and Pine Mountain Railroad:

We've had so many calls and emails for confirmation of the following information that we've decided to make this announcement for the record.
Cody Shuler was pleased to announce, effective with our October 18, 2008 shows at the Eaglesnest Auditorium for the 2d Annual Raymond Fairchild Mtn. Music Celebration, that Dale Perry had come on board as the newest member of Cody Shuler & Pine Mountain Railroad.

Dale will be picking the five-string. Dale will be joining the band's outstanding harmony vocals, something for which Cody Shuler & Pine Mountain Railroad's last two albums, Alone With Forever ( 2007) and, one of Billboard's current top albums this fall, Pickin, Praisin & Singin - Hymns from the Mountain (Rural Rhythm Records, 2008) have earned wide critical acclaim. Have a great day, everyone. For Cody Shuler & Pine Mountain Railroad,
Bill

Northwest Territory at Lehman's

An unexpected surprise during our annual vi st to Lehman's Hardware and Appliance, Kidron Ohio, was the sound of Bluegrass music as we entered the newly remodeled and expanded building. A visit to Lehman's is a step back in time, their mission is to serve the local Amish, non electric, community, but are known worldwide, and they are now a tourist destination.

Northwest Territory, Mike Gorrell, Radford Vance, Michelle Birkbey-Vance, and Kerri Lehman, were presenting their usual fine show without amplification, in the new media room at Lehman's. They play a semi regular schedule there, and will be back next Saturday, 10/26, from 11:00am - 2;00pm.

Kerri's son did a great job with his clogging exhibition.

Mike told me that Kerri will be leaving the band soon, and long time member Darla Evans will be returning in January, NWT will once again have the line up they had from 1995 . 2007.

Allegheny Drifters at Troyers's

The Allegheny Drifters concert at Troyer's Country Dining in Berlin Ohio, was a success by any measurement, the singing and picking were excellent as we have come to expect from the Drifters. Especially evident, in this small room, was Bernie's tasteful lead guitar work, I believe it is sometimes overlooked in a larger outdoor venue.

The promoters seemed pleased with the less that capacity attendance, and have announced that beginning in January bluegrass will be presented every Saturday at Troyer's.

If they are able to grow the audience this could become another great venue for Bluegrass. One important factor is the management seems to really like the music, It is not only a business opportunity, but something they want to do.

Amish Country, Holmes County Ohio

Darlene and I are in Holmes County Ohio, for The Allegheny Drifters Show tonight at Troyer's Country Dining. Concert details are in an earlier post.

You know you are in Amish country when Wal Mart provides a hitching post and shelter.

I will be posting pictures from tonight's show and more from this area later.

Darrin Aldridge, Brooke Justice - New Release

Pinecastle Recording ArtistsDarin Aldridge & Brooke Justice Release I'll Go With You.

Today Darin Aldridge and Brooke Justice release their gospel album, I'll Go With You, on Pinecastle Records. The musical couple, who have their wedding date set for this Dec. 27th, met at church about three years ago. Although they were performing with different groups, Darin and Brooke began playing and performing together more than two years ago.

Darin Aldridge has a background with the legendary bluegrass group, The Country Gentlemen. Following high school, Darin toured the U.S. and Canada with The Country Gentleman for seven years, earning him four nominations for bluegrass mandolin player of the year. Apart from his commitment to he and Brooke's project, Darin currently tours with The Circuit Riders, which he has been a member of for the past three years. Additionally, Darin formerly released his solo album, Call It A Day, on Pinecastle Records.

Brooke Justice began singing at the young age of five. Her family and church helped to foster her ambitions of becoming a performer. She spent much of her youth engaged in various music competitions, even winning recognition in such competitions as Nashville Star. It was only about four years ago that Brooke picked up the mandolin, even further branching her musical talents. Before performing with Darin, Brooke was a member of the gospel group Pureheart.
I'll Go With You features Darin Aldridge on guitar, Brooke Justice on mandolin, Chris Bryant on banjo, Eddie Biggerstaff on bass and Perry Woddie on resonator guitar. Darin and Brooke are the lead vocalists for the group, yet all five members sing and contribute to harmonies.I'll Go With You is available for purchase at The Music Shed and County Sales.Click to access the album through Pinecastle Records.

Stolen Mandolin Recovered

It has just been reported that Chris Harris' stolen mandolin has been recovered. Clay Rigdon of Sam Ash Music in Nashville credits a post on the Bluegrass Blog for making him aware of the theft. When he came 'in contact' with the mandolin he started the recovery process.

Congratulations to our friends at the Bluegrass Blog for aiding in the recovery.

IBMA Offers Health Insurance

The IBMA has announced a Health Insurance plan that is available to members. With many in the bluegrass community without health coverage, this seems like an opportunity for affordable
coverage. The following was taken directly from the IBMA web site.
===========================================================

IBMA Sound HealthCare

IBMA has teamed with the National Business Associations Sound HealthCare program to offer options for affordable rates on worldwide comprehensive health insurance to its professional members.*

Sound HealthCare will offer members a choice of program options, each of which can be shaped to meet individual needs and budgets. In addition, group coverage is also available for groups or companies and their employees – custom tailored to needs. The primary strength of the program stems from Sound HealthCare’s affiliation with several different providers, thereby expanding the number of options while keeping expenses low.

Available plans provide emergency care and treatment anywhere in the world.

The only requirement for members to enroll is active IBMA professional membership (either individual or organizational). And even if a member is covered by a different health insurance plan, a member can enroll the rest of their family which does not have coverage.

For more information, visit: http://www.nationalbusiness.org/IBMA/IBMA.htm or contact R.J. Stillwell at musicrow@aol.com or by calling 615-256-8667.

IBMA is thrilled to be able to provide this new benefit to members and their families!

Anniversary of IBMA

The first organizational meeting of what would become The International Bluegrass Music Association, IBMA, was held in Nashville Tennessee, October 16, 1985.

The meeting of some of the most prominent people in Bluegrass was called by Lance Leroy, long time manager for Lester Flatt and proprietor 0f The Lancer Agency.

IBMA Keynote Address Available

The IBMA has posted the keynote address from last week's business conference on line.

The address, delivered by Roger Brown, President of the Berklee College of Music, spoke of the parallels in the birth of Bluegrass and Bebop in the 1940s and 50s.

Berklee has recently added the banjo and mandolin to their curriculum. Many of the current and future young stars of Bluegrass are Berklee graduates. Here is a exerpt from Brown's address:

"We have made banjo and mandolin principle instruments. We presented Honorary Doctorates to Earl Scruggs and Ricky Skaggs. Our alumni are making their mark in bluegrass and related musics: Casey Driessen, Rushad Eggleston, Natalie Maines, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Andy Hall, Chris Pandolfi, Bryn Davies and Japanese banjo player Hiro Arita, and some newly minted alumni like Nate Leath, Ashley Caudhill, Joe Walsh and Charlie Worsham. And as a result, we are getting some very serious players at the college—one group from Berklee (Eric Roberston, Nate Leath, Sam Grisman, Nick Falk and Stash Wyslouch) is doing a showcase here later this week and I’m told they can tear it up. Mando champion Dominick Leslie, a freshman at the college, plays a showcase later tonight."

Ronnie Reno, Makes Presentation to IBMM

Ronnie Reno, in his own words:

"One of the highlights of the IBMA convention held here in Nashville on Oct.1st was when I presented some of my Dad's and Red's memorabilia to the International Bluegrass Music Museum."

"I am very proud of the fact that Don Reno and Red Smiley are in the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame. I was able to give the museum some more of the personal treasure's that I have of Dad's and Red's. I presented them some old posters that I have saved of the band back in the middle 50's. What was so great was that they used them as cue cards while doing TV shows. They would write down songs that they didn't know and the floor producer would hold them up beside the camera while they would sing them live on their 'Top Of the Morning' TV show. I was also able to give them Red's dog tags from WWII and some old pictures of them along with a tie clasp of Red's and some cuff links of Dad's.

"If you ever get the chance please go by and visit the IBMM in Owensboro KY. and tell them Ronnie sent you."

Allegheny Drifters at Troyer's Country Dining

The Allegheny Drifters will be presenting their show of great pickin' and outstanding Bluegrass harmonies, at Troyer's Country Dining, Berlin Ohio.

The buffet diner show will be Saturday October 18, at 5:15 PM.

Troyers picked up the area Bluegrass shows, after the long running series at Grandma's Homestead was discontinued.

Darlene and I can vouch for the fine food at Troyer's, we have been there several times. This is our first opportunity to hear Bluegrass there. In what will most likely our last camping trip of the year, we are returning to the Amish area of Ohio for the first time in two years, a very relaxing place to spend time and enjoy the serene surroundings. We will be staying at the Scenic Hills RV Park, a great place for self contained units.

Tired in Nashville

Tired in Nashville, is there a song there? Well anyway, no more posts today, and maybe for several days. Darlene and I are taking the great circle route back to Western PA, with a side trip to northern Indiana to visit relatives. We plan to get home Wednesday.

I have a lot more pictures to post, but depending on Internet availability, that might not be till midweek next week

It has been a great week productive and enjoyable

Till later,

Tyler Grant and Julianne

Tyler Grant had just finished belting out 'Freeborn Man' and started into 'Julianne,' when Doyle Lawson and Darren Beachely got off the elevator, they watched and listened or a few seconds and then approached and joined in with the harmony. Needless to say, Tyler was shocked and amazed and overjoyed.

A great kind jesture, by two real gentlemen.

A once in a lifetime moment for me.
