Road Warriors Completing Fourth Year with Over 100 Dates, Including Acclaimed Tour with Steve Martin
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (October 27, 2009)
Rebel Records’ Steep Canyon Rangers are wrapping up a month that saw them performing on the 20th Annual International Bluegrass Music Awards Show with Steve Martin, before continuing on his acclaimed tour which brought them to The Late Show with David Letterman and The View; the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, Carnegie Hall, the Ryman Auditorium, and other venues in cities including Boston, Atlanta, Charlotte, Washington, Toronto, Chicago, Denver, Santa Fe and Troy, NY.
The Rangers currently grace the cover of the November issue of Bluegrass Unlimited, with a feature written by Penny Parsons.
The band released their fourth studio album for Rebel, Deep in the Shade, on October 6, and it is currently at #3 on Billboard’s Top Bluegrass Albums chart (issue date October 31). Samples of some of the album reviews follow:
“Though all five members are terrific pickers, the focus is almost always on the song, with Woody Platt singing the story and his bandmates musically reinforcing the mood, whether it’s the wistfulness of ‘The Mountain’s Gonna Sing’ or the vengeful kiss-off of ‘Heartbreak Is Real.

CD Review: Del McCoury Band's ‘Family Circle'

Tuesday, October 27, 2009
Del McCoury Band
FAMILY CIRCLE
Having recently celebrated his 50th year in the business, Del McCoury should be commended for continually testing the boundaries of bluegrass music, a feat that's earned him slots at Bonnaroo and made fans out of Elvis Costello and Björk. Joined by his two sons as well as bass player Alan Bartram and acclaimed fiddler Jason Carter, the septuagenarian acts half his age as he covers songs by Mark Knopfler, Jerry Lee Lewis and other acts not typically associated with the high lonesome sounds of bluegrass.
Knopfler's 'Prairie Wedding' sounds as though it could be a McCoury original, but the most interesting cover on 'Family Circle' is the Charlie Rich-penned 'Break Up,' which was made famous by Jerry Lee Lewis during the golden age of Sun Records. The boys replace Lewis's frenetic piano riffs with sharp acoustic picking as McCoury channels his inner rockabilly singer, accenting his mountain tenor with a few Killeresque vocal theatrics.
It's not all rock-and-roll here...

Give this Wednesday and have your gift increased by 50%.

WYEP will be participating in the Pittsburgh Foundation/PittsburghGives Match Day, a one-day only event where all donations (minimum of $50) made at PittsburghGives.org will be matched $0.50 to the dollar. What are the minimum/maximum amount I can donate?
The minimum amount is $50. Donations of up to $2,500 will be matched.
How long does this match last?
The 50% matching begins at 10am on October 28 and lasts only as long as the $300,000 allocated to the participating non-profits is still available. This is expected to go rather quickly, so it's essential to make your donation as soon as you can, starting at 10am on Wednesday.
How do I make my donation?
In order to speed up your donation process on the 28th, it's recommended that you set up an individual donor account ahead of time at PittsburghGives.org.

We encourage you to support WYEP on October 28. And, if you've already donated your allocated budget to WYEP for the year, please consider donating to another worthy organization on this day, this really is an opportunity not to be missed. WYEP is very fortunate and grateful to be able to participate in this generous day of matching.

Ralph Stanley - Still Telling, and Singing, Mountain Tales - NYTimes .com

Old-Timer, Still Telling Mountain Tales
By CHARLES McGRATH

Ralph Stanley is one of the last, and surely the purest, of the traditional country musicians. He’s such a stickler that he has no use for the dobro, let alone electrified instruments, and he’s not overly fond of the term bluegrass. He prefers to call what he performs “that old-time mountain music.” He plays the five-string banjo in the claw-hammer style he learned from his mother — or he used to, until arthritis caught up with him — and he sings in a raw, keening Appalachian tenor.

The songs tend to be about hard times, unfaithful lovers, deceased children, lonely graves. One of his most famous, “O Death,” is a pleading dialogue with the Grim Reaper himself. It used to be said that when you heard a Ralph Stanley tune, you either wanted to get drunk or...

The project will feature two singles that were released last week during the International Bluegrass Music Association’s (IBMA) World of Bluegrass held in Nashville, Tennessee.

On Wednesday, September 30 during the IBMA convention, Rural Rhythm Records hosted a Private Showcase that included music industry VIPs who were treated to incredible performances and surprise announcements. This special event included an extremely moving performance by Michael Martin Murphey and Bluegrass #1 hit artist, Carrie Hassler singing “Wildfire.” Murphey and Hassler recorded the new version of this mega hit song just two weeks prior to the IBMA convention. Last Thursday, Murphey appeared on WSM Radio with Bill Cody where the song was played during the show. Due to the overwhelming listener response after 'Wildfire's' airplay on the show, and in anticipation of Murphey and Hassler performing the song October 17th at SMU game during the half-time show, the song will be available for digital download in the next few weeks.

Also during the VIP Showcase, Murphey performed another new single, “Running Gun” with bluegrass veteran, Audie Blaylock & Redline much to the delight of the audience. The song will also be available on “BUCKAROO BLUE GRASS 2.”

Doyle Lawson Joins The Harper Agency

Goodlettsville, TN - One of Christian music’s leading booking agencies, The Harper Agency has announced the addition of multi-award winning bluegrass Gospel group, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver to the agency’s list of artists. Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver was awarded Vocal Group of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association seven consecutive years. The group also received the honor of IBMA’s Gospel Performance of the Year three years in a row, with recording projects released by Crossroads Entertainment. Lawson’s latest Gospel recording, Help Is On The Way, which released in the Spring of 2008, has afforded the popular group yet more success, as the title cut became the recording’s first Number One song on Southern Gospel Music’s Singing News Magazine National Top 80 Radio Airplay Chart, a first for the Bluegrass legend, and his second release, “Eternity Has Two” became a Top 5 release.

According to Jeff Harper, The Harper Agency will be scheduling Lawson and his popular group at Christian music events and concert events in churches nationwide. “We are very excited about the opportunity to work with this legendary group,” Harper states. “Over the years they have enjoyed tremendous success in the bluegrass music genre and with the success they have enjoyed in recent years in the Gospel music field, there is a great demand for them at Christian music events and churches, as well.'

Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver may be scheduled by contacting the Harper Agency at 615-851-4500 or via e-mail at info@harperagency.com. A complete list of artists scheduled by the Harper Agency is available at http://harperagency.com."

Liz Meyer Health Update

LIZ MEYER NEWS:
Liz missed the EWOB Festival 2009 due to severe back problems caused by an aggressive breast cancer invasion of the bones that virtually destroyed her spine (backbone). Since early June, Liz has been undergoing treatment at a very special little hospital in southern Germany.

German cancer clinics are considered the gold standard in cancer treatment worldwide, and Klinik St. Georg is the gold standard among German cancer clinics. Liz attributes this to its medical director, Dr. Friedrich Douwes, whom she describes as brilliant, creative, and years ahead of his time. Dr. Douwes is also the President of the German Oncology Association.
Although Liz arrived looking like a lost cause, her treatments are going very well. The cancer invasion has been reversed, her bones are slowly and successfully being remineralized, and soon, with lots of physiotherapy and exercise, Liz will be able to sit up for the first time in 4 months. She expects to be home in Holland before Christmas.

You can write to Liz at this address.
