IBMA to Host "Musicians Social Media Masterclass Webinar December 13 with Ariel Hyatt‏

IBMA Hosts “Musician’s Social Media Masterclass” Webinar December 13 with Ariel Hyatt

Call 888-438-4262, 615-246-3222 or email nancyc@ibma.org/ to register

.

We are pleased to host a professional development webinar presented by New York-based publicist and author, Ariel Hyatt, at 6-7 p.m. Central Time on Monday, December 13, 2010

Musician’s Social Media Masterclass, based on Hyatt’s book Music Success in Nine Weeks, is a guide for musicians to define their brand, grow their fan base, earn more income and achieve success in the digital environment, whether they are new to the industry or longtime artists. Music Success in Nine Weeks provides the missing manual for musicians trying to make sense of the social media revolution and explains step-by-step how to create a profitable and sustainable business from their music. Structured like a workbook with room for exercises and notes, the book takes all of the guesswork out of where to start and how to achieve success as a musician in today’s world.

Members of the artist promotional team—managers, PR consultants, record label publicists, booking agents and more—will also be interested in the content of this webinar, as it relates to the artists and music they are promoting. Merchandisers and luthiers who work with a roster of endorsed artists and event producers who promote their concerts and festivals in conjunction with the bands who perform at them will also find useful social networking tips and strategies outlined in Hyatt’s training.

Participants at IBMA webinars click a link on their computer screens to enter the virtual classroom and then dial into a conference call number or access audio through a computer headset. Questions will be taken throughout the training in a Q&A box located in the corner of each participant’s computer screen.

Hyatt presented an immensely well-received workshop on this topic on September 27 during IBMA’s 2010 Business Conference and also at the 2010 Leadership Bluegrass Masterclass held Sept. 26, in Nashville. She’s returning by popular demand for more interaction with IBMA members.

To register, call 615-256-3222 or 888-GET-IBMA. The fee is $40 for IBMA members or $50 for non-members. IBMA members are welcome to submit ideas for future webinars to nancyc@ibma.org.

IBMA member Lisa Jacobi had this to say about IBMA’s November 15 webinar, “Creating Strategic Alliances on Facebook,” presented by Henri Deschamps and Matt Munsey: “Last night [after the online session] I told my husband, Joe, that the first IBMA webinar was the best $40 I've ever spent, for the clear and directed information, and for the new friends I have made in the music industry.”

Dailey & Vincent put on outstanding show in Frostburg, MD

Brenda & I had the opportunity to attend the Dailey & Vincent concert in Frostburg, MD this past Saturday evening.

Before the show, we had the pleasure of meeting up with several good friends including the creator of this blog, John Trout and his wife Darlene.

The show was well attended (read sold out) and the Palace Theatre has great acoustics that complimented the excellent job done by Daily & Vincent's sound crew.

The evening opened with regional band, Black Diamond. The guys did an outstanding job. They were limited to about 25 minutes of music and it would have been nice to have seen a little more from them.

After a brief intermission, D&V hit the stage and continued to entertain for the next two hours. I had never attended a D&V concert live and I was not disappointed. These guys and their band are at the very top of their game. There is no question as to why they are heralded as one of bluegrass music's premier, top level bands.

The harmony was impeccable, the musicianship flawless, and the entertainment factor was through the roof.

If you ever get the opportunity to attend one of their concerts, please do so... you wont regret it.

Brenda's birthday is today (November 15) so this concert was part of her gift. While these photos were taken with my cell phone, in less than ideal lighting, I think the picture shows she had a great time.

Reviews of new bluegrass releases

By KEITH LAWRENCE - Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer

BALSAM RANGE, "Trains I Missed," Mountain Home Music. 12 tracks.

"Trains I Missed," the third album in the last four years by this North Carolina-based band, should make several "Ten Best" lists this year.

The band melds country, gospel, bluegrass and old English ballads into a sound that is both traditional and contemporary.

Having four lead singers - and two writers on this project - shows the band's depth.

The title cut is about a man who has made mistakes, but has finally found his way in life.

Caleb Smith, the band's guitarist, wrote and sings lead on "The Touch," a great new gospel song. He also sings lead on "Hard Price To Pay," a tale of a moonshiner wasting away in prison

Hot Rize on Mountain Stage

Darlene and I were at the recording of a Mountain Stage show in Morgantown WV last night, there portion as well as the Red Knuckles were very enjoyable as you would expect. However there was a lot barely tolerable parts of the show also from the other quests. Now I remember why I stopped listening on a regular basis. I definitely is a musical VERIETY show.

If you are not aware Bryan Sutton has replaced the late Charles Sawtelle in Hot Rize, with this exposure look for Bryan to be a strong contender for IBMA guitar player of the year. What has not not previously know is that Red and The Trailblazers have a new bass player, Swade.

Thanks to Fred Bruckman we a fine picture of Hot Rize, as well as Red Knuckles and The Trailblazers, including a rare successful photo of Swade.
Note: Swade was not forthcoming as to the spelling of his name, this is my guess.

Reviews of new bluegrass releases

By KEITH LAWRENCE - Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer

RODNEY DILLARD & THE DILLARD BAND, "I Wish Life Was Like Mayberry," Rural Rhythm. 19 tracks.

On March 18, 1963, America got its first look at The Darling Family on the popular "Andy Griffith Show."

The musical hillbillies only made six appearances on the show over four seasons - plus the 1986 reunion movie, "Return to Mayberry..."

...In 1962, The Dillards hit the road for Los Angeles with $300 in their pockets, stopping to work in Oklahoma along the way.
Once in Los Angeles, the band was signed almost immediately by Elektra Records. Then, a DesiLu Studios representative saw an ad in Variety magazine about Elektra signing the Dillards. A few days later, they were called in to audition for the role of The Darlings on "The Andy Griffith Show."
The IBMA says repeated airings of those six episodes over the past 47 years make The Dillards "the most often seen bluegrass artists on television, thanks to reruns."
So, it's hardly surprising that Rodney Dillard has gone back to Mayberry for an album that's sure to be a favorite of the thousands of fans who still watch the reruns on television.
Newer songs include "The Darlin' Boys," an tribute to the characters the band played on the show; "There Goes The Neighborhood," a humorous look at urban sprawl and rural life; "Wicker Rocking Chair," a song about finding happiness in simpler things; "The Mayberry Hat," a ballad about a hat that evokes memories of better times; and "The Andy Griffith Show Song," a ballad that suggests that America would be better if it was more like Mayberry.
Older material includes songs the band sang on "The Andy Griffith Show": "There Is A Time" (which was sung on three different episodes), "Dooley," "Salty Dog Blues," "Banjo In The Hollow" and "Leaning On The Everlasting Arms."

Woodsong's Old Time Radio Hour... a GREAT bluegrass resource

Woodsong's Old Time Radio Hour is a worldwide multi-media celebration of grassroots, Americana music. Once there, you can explore the beautiful world of folk, bluegrass, songwriting, new artists, literature, worldwide radio, television and concerts.

Hosted by Michael Johnathan, the show
tapes each Monday at the historic Kentucky Theatre, 214 Main St, Lexington, KY. Their web site says... "WoodSongs is not a concert ... it is a live-audience musical conversation, a radio and television broadcast with song performances by the artists." Concert-or-not... the shows are very entertaining and well worth exploring.

Their archives of past performances are nothing short of amazing and bluegrass fans will have plenty to choose from in both audio and video formats.

Dailey & Vincent Present $20,000 check to Tennessee Bible College‏

Award-winning bluegrass duo Dailey & Vincent presented a check for $20,000 to the Tennessee Bible College in Cookeville, Tennessee, representing their portion of proceeds from the sale of their CD, Singing From the Heart. The all a cappella gospel collection, honoring the Church of Christ’s practice of singing without instruments, was released on Rounder Records in 2009. Tennessee Bible College is a Church of Christ institution.

"Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent are not only two excellent musicians and performers, but two down-to-earth good, humble men,” said Malcolm Hill, Chancellor of Tennessee Bible College. “They want to see a better world and are willing to give to that end. The support they give to Tennessee Bible College helps make possible a college education for worthy young men and women. May God continue to bless and keep them."

“We’re so pleased to be able to present this check to the college to fund scholarships so that deserving students can get an education,” said Darrin Vincent.

“Years ago, when Malcolm first told me about the need for scholarship funds at the college, we talked about putting a gospel CD together,” said Jamie Dailey. “This was long before Darrin and I decided to form a duo. It took several years and the support and participation of a long list of incredible singers, but we were finally able to make this project happen. To see what it’s done for the college is very gratifying.”

To record the album of quartets, Dailey & Vincent called on the very best of vocalists from the worlds of bluegrass, southern gospel and country music. Guests on the album include tenor Andy Ball, bass Glenn Dustin, tenor Anthony Facello, baritone Tony King, tenor Shawn Lane, bass Jeff Pearles, as well as Doyle Lawson, who sang baritone on “Near the Cross,” and Molly Skaggs, daughter of Sharon White and Ricky Skaggs.

Singing From the Heart earned two International Bluegrass Music Award nominations—for Gospel Recorded Performance of the Year (“Don’t You Wanna Go to Heaven”) and Best Liner Notes for a Recorded Project. The notes were written by Fred Bartenstein.

Owensboro wants larger bluegrass museum

New site would have stage, shops

OWENSBORO, Ky. — City officials are hoping to move their bluegrass museum to a new site and create an entire bluegrass music center around it.
“This could be the biggest thing we do downtown,” Owensboro Mayor Ron Payne said of the proposal to move the International Bluegrass Music Museum into a state office building and expand it into the International Bluegrass Music Center.

The center would feature an indoor/outdoor stage, shops, and a barbecue restaurant, according to the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer.

The Western Kentucky city is a fitting spot for the center. Bill Monroe, known as the father of bluegrass music, was born and is buried in Rosine, about 40 miles southeast of Owensboro.

The city's drive to capitalize on bluegrass began 25 years ago when what was then the Owensboro-Daviess County Tourist Commission launched a drive to create a bluegrass festival, a professional bluegrass association, a convention, an awards show and a museum. Full AP story in The Courier - Journal
