Ryman Bluegrass Series To Include Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper

The historic Ryman Auditorium has announced it's list of artists to perform for the annual "Bluegrass Nights at the Ryman" series and this year they have asked Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper to join this esteemed list of artists. Michael and the band will kick off the series along with bluegrass legend Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver on Thursday, June 25th. The series will offer performances every Thursday thereafter through July 30th and will also feature Vince Gill, Ralph Stanley, Rhonda Vincent and more. FYI: This message is from the group that promotes the January Ice Jam and the Spring National Road Festival at Richeyville Pa. All money they raise is used for charity, mainly providing aid to local regional and national Bluegrassers in time of need. They also support Bluegrass on WYEP with an annual

Please include family favorites, potluck goodies, camping favorites, ethnic recipes, or others that you wish to share.

Bluegrass Benefit in Donegal Pa.

Hi all,
I would like to bring to your attention an event that is going to take place on March 28th, from 6pm until ??? at the American Legion post in Donegal. The benefit is for the family of Samuel Hicks. Samuel Hicks, 33, was one of several federal investigators closing in on an cocaine distribution ring in western Pennsylvania when he was killed. There will be a $5 cover at the door and a buffet included with the cover. Throughout the night, there will be 50/50 drawings as well as numerous raffles for prizes donated by local business. There is a bar that will serve adult beverages, therefore no one under 18 will be permitted to attend.

Music will be provided by two bands, East Run Band from Doddridge Co, West Virginia, a band who I have had the privilege to play with recently, along with the Gypsy Knights. Some of you will know the Knights from playing locally. The band consists of Scott Brown, Pat Petraca, Joe Goldon and Don Brown. Come on out and eat, drink and enjoy a wonderful night of music for a good cause. Doors will open at 6 pm with the music starting at 8pm and ending around midnight. Hope to see you there.

Alison Brown, GRAMMY-award winning banjoist, "ground-breaker" (USA Today), and co-founder of Compass Records announces new CD The Company You Keep (April 7, 2009) + bonus DVD

The DVD, which was filmed in HD and recorded in high res audio, features the Alison Brown Quartet with Joe Craven on a set that includes tunes from The Company You Keep as well as fan favorites from past albums.

The title of Alison Brown's new studio release, The Company You Keep, was originally inspired by the words of Spanish novelist Miguel de Cervantes (Don Quixote): "Tell me the company you keep and I'll tell you what you are." But it wasn't until the project began to develop that Brown realized the title actually held two separate, but equally important, meanings for her and for her music. "I've been writing, recording and performing my own tunes for nearly 20 years now," Brown reflects. "And as I thought about the progression of my sound - our band sound - I began to think about what a collaborative effort this musical journey has been. After 15 years of recording, performing and philosophizing about music with (pianist) John R Burr and (bassist) Garry West, I really wanted to draw that collaborative spirit to the forefront on this album." The Company You Keep features the musicians she has spent most of the past 15 years performing with: John R. Burr (piano), Garry West (bass), David Grisman Quintet alum Joe Craven (fiddle/mandolin/percussion) and Larry Atamanuik (drums) alongside guests John Doyle (guitar), Stuart Duncan (fiddle) and Kenny Malone (drums) on a set of engaging, upbeat and melodic tunes, many of which were co-written by Brown and Burr, in some cases right before the recording sessions.

According to Brown, The Company You Keep is also a tip of the hat to her approach to business as one of the co-founders of the Compass Records Group. "I co-founded Compass with Garry West the same year that I began touring with my own band so the development of the label and the development of the band have grown up in tandem, even though I didn't release an album on Compass until 1998." At a time when the record business is being turned upside down the Compass Records Group has continued to grow and today boasts nearly 600 releases across the Compass, Green Linnet and Mulligan Records catalogs. "Our artistic aesthetic is very well described by the idea that the company we've built and sustain (both in our roster and our staff) reflects our values and musical priorities. We take a very long tail approach to our business and feel a great sense of pride in having built a business model that is scaled to be successful with records that may only sell a few thousand units. Some of our smallest records say more about us as a label than our biggest selling records do."

Alison Brown is a Harvard alum, received her MBA from UCLA and worked as an investment banker before joining Alison Krauss and Union Station for a three year stint in 1989. She has received 3 GRAMMY nominations for her solo recordings and a GRAMMY award in 2001 for Best Country Instrumental Performance as well as the International Bluegrass Music Association's award for Banjo Player of the Year. Praised by both fans and critics alike, her take on the traditionally Appalachian instrument has earned Brown features on CBS Sunday Morning, NPR's All Things Considered, and in The Wall Street Journal. The Company You Keep will be available everywhere April 7, 2009.

HEARTLAND – A New CD by Tommy Webb Set for April Release

Rural Rhythm Records is proud to announce the upcoming April 21, 2009 release of the new album by TOMMY WEBB titled, “HEARTLAND.” Tommy is from Langley, Kentucky located in Floyd County near the well-known Highway Route 23 that so many award-winning Country and Bluegrass music artists have originated. His voice has a genuine Big Country & Rootsy Bluegrass quality brand that is unmistakably his own - Simply put, he sounds like Tommy Webb!

Ron Stewart produced the album and recently commented, "Tommy Webb is one of those rare ‘Down to Earth, No Sugar Coating’ talents that only comes along once in a grand while that grabs you and makes you listen. We had a list of songs that the three of us made, with fifteen or twenty songs from each of the decades and the albums that he made before he started owning his own recordings, and he would just pick some things to record on each session—and then we just went in and knocked them out. So they all have a real live feel to them.”
CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF DEL MCCOURY is far from a swan-song. If Del’s summer tour schedule is any indication, it’s going to be a lively celebration indeed. 4th Annual Monroe-Style Mandolin Camp

OWENSBORO, KY- March 6, 2009 - This museum will present the 4th annual Monroe-Style Mandolin Camp this coming September 11-13 2009 in Owensboro, Kentucky. Our goal in hosting this camp is to preserve the unique, historic performance art of Bill Monroe, "The Father of Bluegrass," by teaching his style of mandolin playing and songwriting to a new generation of players. Our Faculty Mike Compton, Camp & Curriculum Director Dr. Richard Brown, Associate Director Skip Gorman, Tim O'Brien. Jody Stecher, Butch Waller, Special Guests

Tom Ewing, Monroe historian, concert performer, Will Kimble, luthier.
The 2009 curriculum has been revised by Camp Director Mike Compton, one of the world's pre-eminent mandolin teachers. The new classes will reflect his experience after three years at the Monroe-Style Mandolin Camp and ongoing conversations with campers and faculty. He will lead our 2009 faculty in presenting new classes and workshops related to the development and execution of Monroe's mandolin style, songwriting, musical influences, and more.
At the Monroe-Style Mandolin Camp, you will spend three days with 6 of the finest mandolin players and 50 of the coolest mandolin campers on Planet Earth. With registration capped at 50, the camp's intimate environment allows for ample opportunities to receive personal, hands-on instruction from each of these legends of Monroe-Style mandolin.
New to this year's camp on Friday is an All-Night Pickin' Party and Bluegrass Invitational which will bring local and regional musicians together with campers for a non-stop jam session and barbeque feast.
New to this year's camp on Saturday between 4:30 and 5:00 will be six 30-minute private master classes, one with each member of the faculty. All campers' names will be put in Red Smiley's hat. Six names will be drawn at the opening session Friday at noon. (If your name is drawn and you don't want or need this master class, we can either re-draw or you can gift it to a friend.)
Returning in 2009 is a class on Mandolin Set Up and Maintenance by Will Kimble of Kimble Mandolins. Will is available Friday and Saturday for basic set ups and fret work. He will charge for materials and a reasonable fee for each work order. Please request a WORK ORDER FORM from Brenda Smith at the museum: 270-926-7891. Your mandolin will get an "appointment" based on the estimated time required to perform the requested service.The 2009 All-Star Faculty Concert will be amazing. Each member of the faculty is an internationally known performer with his own band (see bios). Tom Ewing, Monroe's last guitarist with the Blue Grass Boys, adds vintage authenticity and historic relevance as well as great vocals and rhythm guitar. Campers are invited to an exclusive wine reception at the museum prior to the concert.

An Interesting Post Brings Back Memories

The following post and reply were taken from the Western Pennsylvania Bluegrass Committee discussion site. I thought it would be of general interest.


Hard to believe it's been almost 20 years... I'm sure there are at least a few on this list who used to attend the Beaver Valley Bluegrass Festival that the Beaver Creek Bluegrass Band used to hold at Brady's Run Park in Beaver County back in the eighties and nineties. And what a festival it was. I sorely miss it.
Some of the biggest names in bluegrass were playing in our own back yard each Memorial Day weekend. It was there I first saw Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, Tony Rice, Hot Rize, Doyle and Quicksilver, and many other top bluegrass acts of the day. You don't really appreciate something like that until it's gone.

Anyway, Del McCoury was one of the headliners in 1989, and one of his sets, during which David Grisman and Sam Bush sat in on a few numbers, was recorded, and can now be downloaded freely and legally from this page:http://www.archive.org/details/del1989-05-27lateflac
A few words of caution:The files are huge and are in FLAC format, which is a lossless audio format that you probably can't play directly in Windows Media Player (I can't) and probably can't play directly in WinAmp either (I can't). You'll need to download a decoder to convert them to WAV files, which you can play directly, burn to a CD, or convert to MP3. There are probably lots of free decoders available; I got one from here:http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html
The interface is non-intuitive, so you should probably be fairly handy with computers before attempting to use it. If you're not, enlist a friend who is. It's well worth the effort. The sound quality isn't superb, but it isn't bad either. And Del and the boys are absolutely on fire for this set.

I was back on the side of the stage when this took form. David Grisman was playing with Del McCoury. David broke a string and came off stage to change it. Sam Bush was hanging out backstage so David told Sam to grab his mandolin and go back up with him. They would do a 3 mandolin thing with Ronnie McCoury. Sam grumbled that David and Ronnie where warmed up and he was coming up cold but he did it.It was amazing.I am glad there is a recording of it.

I am passing along this info just received from Lynn Beckman. Any show by Ronnie will be a good one, lots of his music mixed with his dad's classics, an easy Saturday drive from western PA. HIGHLY RECOMENDED!!

I just wanted to say thanks, again, for your playing some of my music and to let you know that we are going to have RONNIE RENO AND THE RENO TRADITION in Keyser, West Virginia, on Saturday, March 21 for the POTOMAC HIGHLANDS MAPLE FESTIVAL.

The show will be at the brand new Keyser High School Auditorium just south of Keyser.

NEW CREEK STATION (regional bluegrass band--good one) is set to come on for the first show at 1 p.m. followed by Ronnie and the guys from 2-4 p.m.
