NewsFrom Rob Ickes

Passing on news from Rob Ickes:

Here's a quick summer newsletter to share some tunes, videos and news.

Thanks for taking a few minutes to catch up on what's happening in "Rob-world". Hope your summer is full of great music and friends!

Tunes+videosAngeline the Baker with ANDY LEFTWICH; Old Rugged Cross

These tunes were a blast to record. Andy Leftwich is a prodigious talent on the mandolin as well as the fiddle, and it was great going in the studio with him for the Mel Bay DVD+CD project released last August.

I've posted these two songs in full-song audio and video format; click on the song title to go to the video & audio site or find them at

With Andy Leftwich: a slamming jam on ANGELINE THE BAKER.

OLD RUGGED CROSS: This is one of my favorite hymns and most-requested solos.

If you're a voting IBMA member, thanks for considering these recordings, and Blue Highway's ballot listings as well. Angeline is on the ballot in category #7 (instrumental performance); Old Rugged Cross, category #6 (gospel performance).

fun music with "family & friends"Earl Scruggs, Charlie Haden, Patty Loveless, Tony Rice Blue Highway & more

I've been out performing or in the studio with lots of musicians making music with a great "family and friends" vibe: appearances with Earl Scruggs, with more scheduled (8/13, Grand Rapids, MI; Oct. 3 or 4, Hardly Strictly, SF); with Charlie Haden and his family - including Haden in-law Jack Black (taking bluegrass and roots music to places like the Montreal Jazz Festival!), Tony Rice, and of course my ultimate musical family, Blue Highway, out celebrating our 15th anniversary this year.

In the studio, I've had a great time working on Patty Loveless's new CD, Mountain Soul II (out this September), and Joe Diffie's bluegrass CD. Here's what Patty said about the studio experience: "We just had such a great time," says Patty. "It was like we were singing and playing for each other. We wanted to try and make it live, as much as possible. There were no drums, so everybody gravitated towards each other's inner rhythms." That's my kind of studio vibe, for sure, and I think you'll love this CD.

Road Song newsthanks for a great kickoff!

It's been great fun getting my new solo album out. Courtesy of Outdoor Ads, the CD has literally been on the road, on billboards in Nashville and Charlotte (at right, photo by Cindy Baucom).

For upcoming CD release performances with Michael Alvey and Robinella, see the Dates column (left), and for more info about this CD, go to:

Gearing up for ResoSummit!the sound of 100 dobros...

We're starting to kick into high gear (well, at least 3rd gear) to plan a great ResoSummit - a 3-day, 100-participant total-overload dobro experience. ResoSummit will be held this year Nov. 5-8 in Nashville. It's sold out, but there's always hope for patient people on the wait list! More info:
