Bonnaroo 2010 interview: Graham Sharp of the Steep Canyon Rangers

The Steep Canyon Rangers will perform at Bonnaroo 2010

One of the more interesting bands on the Bonnaroo 2010 lineup was comedian Steve Martin, playing a set not in the comedy tent but a musical set on a stage. But Martin, while an accomplished banjo player, couldn't do it alone. So when he began touring as a musician, he tapped a young group of bluegrass musicians from North Carolina called The Steep Canyon Rangers to serve as his band.
We caught up with The Steep Canyon Rangers' other banjo player, Graham Sharp, to talk about Bonnaroo, performing with Steve Martin, the state of Bluegrass music today, and a host of other topics.
You guys are a fairly young band but it’s been a pretty momentous few years for you, from a “Best Emerging Artist” International Bluegrass Music Award in 2006, to 2 more nominations in 2008, now to an international festivals tour with comedy legend Steve Martin. Has it all sunk in yet?As far as our recent success goes, it's honestly starting to feel strangely normal, just because one amazing thing has been piling on top of the last, it seems. From the start I don't think any of us saw a career in bluegrass as something that would be a fast-track to stardom, but we've been a fortunate bunch from the start. Fortunate to find a group of guys as close knit as we are, to be in a situation where we could make a real go at it, to have such supportive family, to know people inside and outside the bluegrass world connect with our music. We've had some good breaks, but staying together and working hard is what put us in that position and prepared us for it. More...
