'Man of Constant Sorrow' tells bluegrass back-story

...The show is primarily set in the 1960s, with the brothers recalling their time together from childhood memories to the struggles they had as rock music overtook and overwhelmed the traditional pieces they performed. There's also a coda at the 2002 Grammy Awards that serves to show how perseverance truly paid off for Dr. Ralph.

Along the way, audience members get to hear some wonderful music. They laugh at humorous exchanges and situations, but they also see the tragic decline of Carter — a man who wrote more than 100 songs — as alcoholism took its fatal toll.

"The play does show their personal struggles, and the professional struggles they went through to get their music heard," Turney said. "Their lives and their commitment were always to the music. Not to fame, not to fortune, not to the number of records sold. It was always to the music itself."
