Northwest Territory with Lee Olson, great memories of Whetstone Run
Recently my wife, Darlene, and I were privileged to attend a very special Northwest Territory concert in Wooster Ohio. The former leader of Whetstone Run, Lee Olson was the special guest.
Mike Gorrell leader of Northwest Territory, was lead singer and guitarist with Whetstone run for a decade beginning in 1977.
My wife and I have special memories of that period, we were just beginning to follow professional level Bluegrass during about that time. We enjoyed many nights of great Bluegrass from Whetstone Run and their special guests. Many Wednesday evenings we made the five hour round trip to Highway Pizza in State College Pa.
The highlights that are still vivid in our memories include a gentlemen who asked to set at out table during Whetstones's portion of the show. That man was Joe Val, it was our first encounter
with a genuine Bluegrass star. We learned then, what great people Bluegrass artists are, it was our only opportunity to meet and here Joe Val and the New England Bluegrass Boys.
At Highway Pizza, we also had our only opportunity to see and hear The Country Gazette. I remain friends with Alan Munde and Roland White to this day.
Lee, later started to present shows at Freddie's in Windber Pa, a lot closer to home for us, we enjoyed many nights as well as Sunday afternoons there. We had our first of many chances to enjoy The Johnson Mountain Boys at Freddie's. We continue to remain friends with former Whetstone Run members we met there, including, Chris Jones, Lynn Morris, and Marshall Wilborn.
Lee, thanks booking all those shows, and thanks to all and the mentioned above and the current members of Northwest Territory, for the great memories.
A special thanks to Mike for putting together the reunion show.
If these ramblings aroused memories for you, there will be another opportunity to see Lee Olson with Northwest Territory. July 10, Central Pennsylvania Festival for the Arts, State College Pa.
And lest I forget, Northwest Territory will be at The Laurel Highlands Bluegrass Festival, Ligonier Pa., June 19.
